Our Holy Cross men at
Brother
Charles Andersen Residence in San Antonio did rather well in their
studies again this semester. All together, they had 36 courses. They
got one B, 4 A-'s, and all the rest (31) were A's. Well
done!!
Brother Thomas Krieter and Father John Korcsmar drove up to the farewell party for
Father Ed Kadzielawski
in Marble
Falls. Father Ed has served St. John the Evangelist Parish there for 15 years. He will be taking some time off for family vacation, retreat, and a sabbatical.
At the farewell party, we learned several different things about Fr. Ed. John
Hayes told us that on Father Ed's first Saturday there, Father was waiting to get into the Thrift Shop when
he (John Hayes) invited him for a cup of heartwarming drink at a local establishment.
At first, Father Ed said no, then maybe, then "Yes, but have them put
it in a coffee cup."
Ruben Rodriguez
spoke on behalf of the Spanish speaking community and thanked Father Ed for his
15 years of service. One of the C.C.D. teachers told how Wednesday
afternoon C.C.D. classes were always a joy with Father Ed's ever present
smile. She also described how Father Ed showed the class how ashes are
prepared from last year's palms. She recommends that next time Father not
put so much gasoline on the palms before he lights them.
Father Ed will be moving in with
Fr.
Harold Essling while he prepares for Chapter and for his vacation,
retreat, and sabbatical.
Thirty-four students
from five schools sponsored
by the Holy Cross Brothers came to Austin for the Holy
Cross Leadership Conference at St. Edward's
University. The delegates who came are from the student
leadership at Holy Cross School, New
Orleans, LA; Notre Dame High School, Sherman
Oaks, CA; St. Francis High School, Mountain
View, CA; Holy Cross High School, San
Antonio, TX; and Moreau Catholic High School,
Hayward, CA.
Their coming together was, not only to develop
their leadership skills, but also to help them grow in their understanding and
living of the charisms and vision of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Brother
Richard Critz hosted dinner for them at the South-West Province
Center; they also had dinner out at Steiner Lodge on Lake Austin. These
young people are certainly a good sign of hope for the future and will be future
collaborators in the mission of Holy Cross. Congratulations to these five
schools, the students, faculty and staff!!
The feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
is the
patronal feast for the Holy Cross priests. At St. Ignatius the priests,
brothers, and sisters gathered for evening prayer and then a dinner. There
was a good turnout. The Men's Club at St. Ignatius did their usual good
job of preparing the brisket for the Texas dinner.
Everyone in
Monterrey, except Pete gathered at
the professed House to celebrate the feast of the Sacred Heart. This included Hermanas
Juanita y Mica, Fathers Dan, Len, Pepe and Danny (Kajaten), seminarians Ruben,
Paulino and Joshua and candidates Javier, Mario and Gerardo. There
was Mass followed by a fiesta and cena. Len brought the beer, sodas and chips.
Dan brought ice cream. There was a lot of ice cream left but very little beer.
There was little to start with. Pete was at the dynamics retreat for married
couples and couldn't make it. Continuing the celebration, Len took all those
in formation to Parque Estrella on Saturday morning. A good time was
had by all. Josh said he learned
a whole lot more Spanish at the party.
Father
Al Cormier died at Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN on July 4.
Although born in Canada his family moved to Connecticut while
he was very young. He grew up in Connecticut and regarded that as his home.
Father
Cormier took his first vows as a religious of Holy Cross on August 16, 1940
after completing a year's novitiate. He graduated from the University of Notre
Dame in June, 1942. Father Cormier took his final vows as a Holy Cross
religious on June 6, 1944 and was ordained a priest on June 24, 1946.
After ordination Father Cormier taught high school at Columbia
Prep in Portland, Oregon and later at Notre Dame High School in Niles,
Illinois. In the 1960's Father Cormier entered parish ministry. He served as
pastor of St. Joseph Church in Killeen, Texas. Then he served briefly as
associate pastor of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and
Holy Cross Church in Lafayette, Louisiana.
In January, 1977 Father Cormier became pastor of Holy Cross
Church in Lafayette. Several years later he was appointed pastor of Sacred
Heart Church in Baldwin, Louisiana. Father Cormier came to Baldwin at a very
difficult time in the parish's history. Corm was able to weld the parish
together despite a lot of animosity in the parish. The church's pavilion
(Cormier Pavilion) was named in his honor. In June, 1995 Father Cormier became
ill. When Leonard Collins went to see him, people met Len at the rectory
door and said, "You're NOT taking our priest away from us!"
Quite a turnaround. However, his age and ill health forced him to go to
Holy Cross House.
For the last five years Father Cormier resided at Holy Cross
House at Notre Dame, Indiana. Corm was an avid NY Yankees fan.
While he was approaching his last hours, there was a TV playing very loudly
nearby. Father André asked if he would like it turned down. Corm
replied,
"NO! Those are the Yankees playing!"
Requiescat in pace!
