March 2005  Page 3

On Friday morning (March 4, 2005), the Hispanic Ministry Committee gathered at San Matias, one of the chapels of La Luz parish.  They were met by a number of Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist who take Holy Communion to the sick. The committee members went with the people to the homes of the sick.  They had the opportunity to pray with them and to visit them in the homes.  They were able to see how many of the elderly live in Cd. Guadalupe.

Afterwards, everyone returned to San Matias for a presentation on the work of Family Rosary in Mexico.

Sister Joan Mader introduces some of the team from Family Rosary.
Alicia Castaņeda Mesa explained the mission of Family Rosary in Mexico: foster prayer, especially in families, to pray the rosary, and to encourage devotion to Mary.
Karina Bermea Leal explained some of the ways that Family Rosary in Mexico does its work:  Father Peyton had the idea that people would be open to evangelization through entertainment.  And so they have made videos and DVD's.  They have also had large events.  Some of the large events were preceded by a contest: art, music, etc.  The winners were announced at the large gathering.

With this they were able to encourage people to write songs about Mary and the mysteries of the rosary.  The music is "totally Mexican," rather imported because Mexicans wrote it.

One of the contests that they held was one in which people made "recycled rosaries."  Here Karina is showing a rosary which was made from a broomstick that was sliced into small pieces.
This map of Mexico indicates the states where Family Rosary has been active.
