The Holy Cross pastors from the Indiana, Eastern, Southern, and English Canadian provinces gathered at Mundelein, IL (the seminary and pastoral center for the Archdiocese of Chicago) for their annual meeting.  Fr. Ken Molinaro, the assistant provincial of the Indiana Province, organized the gathering.  Dr. Pat Kelly did the presentations on the pastor as leader, prophet, and person.

While we were there, some of us drove down to the Pilsen Neighborhood in Chicago and visited St. Pius V Parish.  That parish has been a center of Mexican apostolic works by the Dominicans.  Fr. Don McNeil is working in that area as part of the Latino Institute at the University of Notre Dame.

Some of the art work in the neighborhood across from the church. Fr. Charles Dahm, OP who works in the area and just finished a book on Hispanic Ministry.
Fr. Charles Dahm explains the geography and history of the neighborhood and the parish Fr. Joe DeVliegher, CSC, Fr. Brendan Curran, OP, Fr. Charles Dahm, with Fr. Don McNeil, CSC and Fr. Chris Cox, CSC.

One of the things that makes this particular parish special is the emphasis and amount of work that is done on the issue of domestic violence.  They have 7 counselors who work with the women and men involved in domestic violence.  They also do a great deal of work with the youth and the gangs.

Back at Mundelein, the CSC pastors continued their workshop with Dr. Pat Kelly.  Mass was celebrated in the afternoon, and there was a session "My Life, My Ministry" each evening in which people shared their experiences, joys, hopes, sorrows.

Father Pete Logsdon celebrates Mass. No, that's not Father Sorin with his Minims.  It's the CSC pastors, with our beloved provincial and Dr. Pat Kelly.

After the pastors' workshop, Fr. John Korcsmar and Fr. Pete Logsdon drove from Mundelein to Cleveland.  After driving by the new Comiskey Park in Chicago, they tuned into the White Sox--Cleveland Indians game.  They cheered the Tribe on to victory.  The Indians were losing at the top of the ninth, 5-2, but they tied it up, went into extra innings and won 11-5.  It's a good thing that Pete and John tuned in!!

Many people got up in the middle of the night to watch the funeral of Pope John Paul II.  Sr. Olivia and Sr. Rose from Dolores Parish got up at 2:00 a.m. so that they could see the funeral with others at St. Mary's Cathedral in Austin at 3:00 a.m.  The church was packed with people at that early hour!!

Father John Korcsmar flew over to New Orleans for a regional meeting of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (C.M.S.M.).  The Houston weather was its usual springtime self, so he had a lovely view of the runways in Austin for about 45 minutes.  Fortunately the plane to New Orleans was also late, so John had enough time to jog over to Concourse E from the north side of Concourse C.  If Dante were to write the Inferno today, I think there would be a special place for whoever decides which planes go to which gates.  He or she always puts the gates for John as far apart as possible.

Fortunately the hospitality at Sacred Heart was a wonderful as ever.  Brother Walter Gluhm stayed up late to make sure John got in, and Father Bob Brennan brewed that wonderful New Orleans coffee in the morning to get us all awake.
