Father John Korcsmar took the novices, Kevin Grove and Ben Rossi on a tour of Holy Cross Austin. They had already seen St. Edward's University and the community residences there. They went to see the place which had been a funeral home where they had started saying Mass for St. Ignatius in 1937, the original St. Ignatius on Johanna (now a Boys and Girls Club), the original San Jose (now an orthodox church). They also saw the building (now a home) which had been the parish hall for Holy Family Parish in South Austin. They went to San Jose and stopped by San Juan Diego Prep School. There they ran into Brother Matthew McKenna, Sister Carlota LeBeouf, Brother Patrick Sopher, and Franciscan Father Jayme Mathias. Brother Matthew took them on a tour of the school. They saw San Jose Church and then the provincial house.
They then went by Our Lady of Guadalupe and Holy Cross Parishes on the east side of Austin. Holy Cross had founded these two parishes, as well as Cristo Rey which they had seen when they did the poverty tour.
They had lunch at Los Comales and were joined by Minerva Camarena-Skeith and her son Agustin (Samuel was in school, and Paul was at work).
They then went on to San Juan Diego and then Dolores Parish.

At Dolores Parish we celebrated the birthday of Sr. Rose Moreno and Mrs. Minga Hernandez. The Fire Department wouldn't allow any candles, but there were plenty of tacos, hot sauce, and a birthday cake. Several of the people who were at the morning Mass also celebrated. A good time was had by all!!

Fathers Len Collins and Dan Panchot drove to Reynosa, MX to look for our Chapter Day site. They also crossed over to McAllen, TX. The Boarder Guard on the US side asked the usual question: Citizenship? Both Len and Dan said US citizens. Then the guard said: I guess you are both from Indiana. Then Len remembered he was wearing a Notre Dame sweat shirt vest. Was this an omen for our future?
Pete Carroll (USC coach) died. When he got to heaven (use your imagination here), God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded USC flag in the window.
"This house is yours for eternity, Pete," said
God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Pete felt
special and walked up to his house.
On his way up the porch, he noticed another house. It was a 3-story mansion with
a Blue and Gold sidewalk, a 50 foot statue of Knute Rockne and a tall flagpole
with an enormous ND flag.
Pete looked at God and said "I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but, why does
Charlie Weis get a better house than me?"
God chuckled and said. "That's not Charlie's house, it's mine."
Dolores Parish is a busy place. Some of the activities (besides CCD) were repairing some of the potholes in the parking lot, making and selling tacos, and helping people get their income tax returns filled out:

These were some of the people lined up to get their IRS forms filled out. I hope that they know how to spell Fr. John's last name correctly so he doesn't have trouble cashing those refund checks! |
