Father John Korcsmar flew down to Lima, Peru to give his course on social justice to the novices in Huaycan.
The plane from Houston to Lima was three hours late, so John got in at 1:30 a.m. Father Jaime Phalan, the novice master, patiently waited at the airport. He had brought a couple of books, but he spent most of his time talking and visiting with people. Since he is so well-known in Lima, and since there are so many foreign religious in Lima, there is always a good possibility that Jaime will run into people he knows at the airport who are also waiting for people from their community. At any rate, they got to the novitiate around 3:00 a.m.
Father Jaime Phalan took his cousin, John Cavanaugh, and Father John into Lima. They went to the Domincan church where San Martin de Porres is buried, went to lunch, then returned to the cathedral and the arzobispado where Jaime has his office.

John was so flattered that some of official Lima
showed up to welcome him!! Actually, there was to be a demonstration of some kind, but the local government was making sure that it didn't happen in the zocalo. No one get into the zocolo (except groundskeepers), and only tourists and those who work in the area (and could prove it) were allowed into the area. |

| The Dominican church (which includes the cloister) has 5 gardens with rooms around them. The religious orders all had churches which included the religious houses that were used as a base for the missionary activity, as well as a central house. | This is the chapter room in the Dominican church. |

| Jaime Phalan changing money. The moneychangers--who are all outside the banks--give a better rate in the exchange. It's ironic that there are these beautiful, big bank buildings, and all the moneychanging takes place outside on the street! | This is the cathedral. The arzobispado, where Jaime has his Family Rosary office, is next door. Besides Jaime, there are at least 7 people who work there. |

| We all went to L'Eau Vive for lunch. This is a restaurant operated by Carmelite Sisters. They operate the restaurant to raise money for their catechetical work--something that John should look into?? |
